12.3. “Don’t Call Me A Pit Bull”
According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the following Argentine Dogo, Boxer, Cane Corso, Presa Canario, Bandog, Tosa-Inu, Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog, Catahoula and many other breeds are not “Pit Bulls”, but they are dogs that are routinely and incorrectly called “Pit Bulls”.

At this point, it should be apparent that there is no consistent definition of a “Pit Bull”. Instead, it seems that a “Pit Bull” is whatever the observer decides to call a dog that is not recognized as being of a specific breed like a German Shepherd, Doberman Pincher, Chow Chow, Chihuahua, Dachshund, etc., and obviously countless “breeds”, “mixed-breeds”, “mutts”, “mongrels” and “curs” are being called “Pit Bulls”.
If it is larger than a small dog and cannot be identified as another breed, it is probably going to be called a “Pit Bull” especially if the dog has been engaged in unacceptable behavior. The fact that this happens all too frequently does not alter the fact that the dog is not a “Pit Bull”.
