11.1. American Kennel Club (“AKC”)

At http://www.apps.akc.org/apps/insideAKC/delegates/delegates_search.cfm, on page 9 it is stated,

“The American Kennel Club is a not-for-profit organization devoted to the advancement of purebred dogs. AKC is a “club of clubs”, comprised of over 500 member clubs and almost 5000 affiliated clubs. There are no individual members. Each member club exercises its voting privileges through a representative known as a “delegate.” The delegates form the legislative body of the AKC, making the rules and electing from their body the individuals who serve on AKC’s Board of Directors.”

At https://www.apps.akc.org/apps/contact//answer_center/faq_dogreg.cfm, the AKC lists their accepted registries. They do NOT include the ADBA, UKC, ABKC, etc.

AKC Accepted Registries

A dog whelped in the United States that is individually registered with one of the Domestic Registry Organizations listed below may be eligible for registration. A three-generation certified pedigree issued by the Domestic Registry Organization must accompany the application for AKC registration.

At https://www.apps.akc.org/apps/contact/answer_center/faq_dogreg.cfm, the AKC states,

“If your dog is spayed or neutered and you’re interested in competing in AKC Companion Events (Obedience, Rally, Agility, Tracking) or Performance Events (Hunt Test, Herding, Lure Coursing, Earthdog etc.) you might want to consider a PAL/ILP number.

PAL/ILP
The Purebred Alternative Listing/Indefinite Listing Privilege (PAL/ILP) is designed to allow dogs that are ineligible for registration, but are distinguishable as a member of an AKC registrable breed, to participate in certain AKC Events.

There are a number of reasons a purebred dog would be ineligible for registration or the owner might choose to apply for a PAL/ILP instead of registering the dog. To list a few of the more common ones:

Dog is from a rescue group or shelter

Owner never received papers from the breeder

Incomplete paper work

Owner does not want to pay late fees

Dog registered with another organization ineligible for AKC registration such as:

America’s Pet Registry (APRI)

Continental Kennel Club (CKC)

Canine Kennel Club (CKC)

United All Breed Registry

United Kennel Club (exceptions for Coonhounds & certain FSS breeds)

North American Purebred Dog Registry”

Note that in my opinion the acceptance of dogs registered in most, if not all, of the preceding “registries” puts into question the distinction between dogs registered with the AKC and all other “registries”. Personally, I think that a “registration” with any “registry”, including the AKC, is worthless and of no value.
